We all have access to a boundless source of wisdom, one that transcends logic and reason. This infinite intelligence can guide us through life’s most challenging obstacles, empower us to tackle new ventures with confidence, and illuminate the best paths for our personal growth. It encourages us to surround ourselves with supportive, uplifting people and fills us with a profound sense of divine understanding.
What is this limitless source of guidance?
Intuition.
It’s a soft whisper, a fleeting thought, a sudden feeling, or even an unexplained vision. It might come to you as a sense of certainty or a gut feeling that tugs at your attention. Intuition arrives in countless forms, acting as an internal compass to help us navigate the complexities of life. It’s not always loud or obvious, but it’s always present—ready to guide us if we’re willing to listen.
While people hold a wide variety of beliefs about intuition—what it is and how it works—most of us have felt its undeniable presence at least once in our lives. Whether it’s a decision we can’t explain but know is right, or an unshakable feeling about a person or situation, intuition often defies logic but proves itself remarkably accurate.
Even the military has recognized intuition’s potential. During the Cold War, the U.S. government launched a secret initiative known as the Stargate Project. This program explored “remote viewing,” a method where individuals used intuitive or psychic abilities to gather intelligence. The goal? To “see” distant locations, uncover hidden military bases, and even describe activities occurring inside secure facilities.
Participants in the Stargate Project were trained in meditation and mindfulness techniques to access subtle impressions. The results were often astonishing. For instance, participants successfully pinpointed the location of a crashed Soviet bomber in Africa—information later confirmed by satellite imagery. They also described secret military installations with surprising accuracy. While the project was eventually declassified, its successes hint at the profound capabilities of intuition to uncover what lies beyond our conscious awareness.
What Is Intuition?
Intuition is often described in two distinct ways:
1. Stored Subconscious Knowledge
The human brain is a marvel, constantly processing vast amounts of sensory information—around 11 million bits per second, to be precise. Yet our conscious mind can only handle a small fraction of this data, approximately 40 to 50 bits per second. The rest is filtered and stored in the subconscious, which continuously monitors patterns, experiences, and subtle cues from our environment.
When we suddenly “know” something without being able to explain how, it’s often the subconscious mind at work. It surfaces information we’ve absorbed but weren’t actively aware of, helping us connect dots and make decisions in moments of need. This process can feel mysterious, but it’s simply our brain’s way of leveraging its incredible processing power.
2. Connection to a Collective Consciousness
Another explanation for intuition goes beyond the individual mind. Some believe we are all part of a greater, interconnected web of consciousness—a universal energy that binds people, places, and knowledge together. This collective consciousness allows us to tap into information beyond our direct experience.
With practice, we can access this universal connection to gain insights that seem to come out of nowhere. These moments of clarity can provide guidance about things we’ve never encountered directly, bridging the gap between the known and the unknown.
Both perspectives resonate deeply. Intuition seems to draw from both the vast, stored knowledge of our subconscious and the collective consciousness that connects us all.
My Journey with Intuition
Growing up in the Midwest, intuition wasn’t a concept I encountered. I didn’t hear the word until my teenage years, and even then, I thought of intuition as something mystical—reserved for those born with psychic abilities. Surely, I wasn’t one of them.
For much of my life, I dismissed intuitive moments as coincidences. When I thought of someone and they called me shortly after, I chalked it up to chance. When I bought the exact same item as my best friend, I figured it was just an amusing accident. And when I felt an unshakable unease, only to discover my twin brother had been in a minor car accident, I questioned my sanity.
Looking back, I see these were intuitive nudges—moments where my inner wisdom was speaking to me. Like so many others, I had been taught to dismiss these experiences instead of embracing them. How often do we brush off intuition as a “funny coincidence” or marvel at how “small the world is”? What if, instead, we recognized these moments for what they are: reminders to trust our inner voice?
Intuition as a Skill
The good news is that intuition isn’t just a random occurrence. It’s a skill—one we can develop and refine with practice. By learning to listen to this inner guidance, we can use it to improve every area of our lives, from relationships and health to career and personal growth.
Building your intuition begins with awareness. Start by noticing those subtle nudges—the feeling that urges you to take a different route home or the thought that reminds you to check on a friend. The more you pay attention, the clearer these messages will become.
Intuition thrives in stillness and reflection. Practices like meditation, journaling, or simply spending quiet time in nature can help you tune in to this inner voice. Over time, you’ll learn to differentiate between intuition and the noise of fear or overthinking.
Your Gift of Intuition
This infinite wisdom is always available to us—patiently waiting for us to notice it, trust it, and let it guide us. The next time you feel a nudge, hear a whisper, or sense something inexplicable, don’t dismiss it. Take a moment to pause, reflect, and ask yourself: What is my intuition trying to tell me?
With practice, this quiet voice can become your greatest ally, helping you navigate life with clarity, confidence, and connection. Intuition isn’t reserved for a select few—it’s a gift we all possess. Trust it. Use it. And watch as it transforms your life.
Be well,
Jennifer
